The Best Tips for De-icing Your Windshield
Those of you without a garage, we salute you: You’re likely pros in the art of window de-icing. Spend less time with the scraper this winter with our suggestions.
If sheltered parking isn’t an option, try covering your windshield with a tarp, towel or sheet. Hold the cover in place using wiper blades or weights. Windshield covers are best when little or no snowfall is expected.
Create a homemade windshield ice remover with one part rubbing alcohol, two parts water and a few drops of dish soap. Apply the solution with a spray bottle and store it indoors so the added warmth can speed up the melting process.
Let your car help you out: Start the engine, set the heater to defrost, adjust the airflow to recirculate and raise the temperature to full heat. If your car has an automatic climate control system, simply set it to defrost.
While alcohol-based de-icing solutions and dishwashing soap aren’t directly harmful to your vehicle’s paint, they can remove car wax over time. If you use windshield pretreatments or de-icers on a regular basis, periodically wash and re-wax any affected areas of the car.
It can be tempting to remove the least amount of
ice necessary before driving off on a frigid morning. However, the proper procedure is to remove ice and snow from all glass on your vehicle. If you cannot see clearly out of the car in every direction, keep scraping. A few extra minutes before you head out will help make sure your trip is a safe one.
Here, moments become life-long memories.
