Ask Ed:
What things can affect my insurance policy?
In each issue of AAA Magazine, we break down an insurance topic – and what it means for you – with answers from Ed Conley, CPIA and Director of Insurance Sales and Financial Services at AAA Ohio. Have a question for Ed? Drop us a line at AAA.com/AskEd.
We’re using our cars less now that I’m working from home; will that lower my insurance payment?
Many insurance companies provided refund checks for reduced usage in the spring that accounted for this change. As the state has
opened back up, and more vehicles are back on the
road, those refund checks will not continue. However, if you are working from home now instead of commuting to your job, you can change your vehicle from “commute to work” to “pleasure usage” and adjust your annual mileage. Depending on your insurance company, this may help reduce your payment.
Many companies now offer user-based insurance. These are either mobile apps on your phone or plug-in devices that monitor driving activity such as hard braking, speed and time of day. This allows the company to base your insurance premium on your specific driving habits. You normally get
a discount just for using it and, if you’re a safe driver, it could add up to big discounts on your auto insurance. Each carrier utilizes this process differently, so be sure to talk with your agent about the best option for you.

Who do you think has the best car insurance rates along with quality service? I have been with “another company” for more than 25 years.
I think their rates are getting too high even with all my good driving and no accidents.
This is a great question. What I’ve found over the years is that even for the best of drivers, if you don’t compare other carriers every few years, you
may be overpaying. With that said, there also can be value in longevity with a company that you may not earn if you change policies. These types of benefits include accident forgiveness and diminishing deductibles if you’ve had claim-free years. Not all companies offer those, but some do after you’ve been with them for a certain amount of time. It’s critical to talk with your agent about these benefits to understand what you could be losing.
Our insurance agency offers auto, home, business and life insurance and represents more than 15 different companies so we can help our clients best manage their policies and
if they have concerns like you do, we can compare other options to see what makes the most sense for you. Several of these companies offer a discount, just for being a AAA member. It’s a benefit that could save you enough to cover the cost of membership for years to come.
