These high-profile reminders to motorcyclists to wear their helmets are central to our ongoing effort to save lives.”
Williams tells his story as part of the committee’s efforts to spread the word about motorcycle safety. Committee members agree it’s a powerful testament to the importance of wearing a helmet.
Williams started wearing his helmet consistently when he met his wife. “She’s awful special to me,” he said. Now he wears it every time he rides.
“Wearing a helmet is like having insurance,” said Williams. “It’s one of those things you never think you’re going to need, and you can make all sorts of excuses, but you never know when you’re going to need it. I’m awful thankful I had it on that day.”
Driving is a skill that can and should be continually improved. AAA offers online and in-person safe driving courses specifically designed to help drivers 60 and older enhance their driving skills and remain driving as long as safely possible.
Some features of these courses include:
• Focus on physical, cognitive, roadway, technology and behavior changes
• Risk reduction driving techniques
• Possible insurance discount upon completion • AAA member discounts
AAA Ohio’s state-approved, in-person Mature Operator course is taught at its headquarters in Worthington. The class is taught over
two days; from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The AAA RoadWise Driver Online course can be completed at your own pace.
Class fee is $29 for AAA members; $39 for nonmembers.
Couples discount fee: $48 for AAA members; $68 for nonmembers.

“You’ve only got one skull. You’ve only got one brain,” said Williams.
“It’s silly to me to not wear the helmet. It’s such an easy thing. It’s not really the inconvenience that I hear people talk about.
I hear people say, ‘I like to feel the wind in my
hair.’ I still feel the wind just fine, and the helmet
doesn’t impede that at all. In fact, it’s what lets
me get back on my bike today.”
Motorcycle Ohio’s “Saved by the Helmet” club recognizes those who survive motorcycle
crashes while wearing a helmet. For more
