The Huntingtons also are responsible for Brookgreen Gardens. This former rice plantation was transformed into a botanical garden, the Lowcountry Zoo and sculpture garden, featuring more than 1,400 works, many by Anna Huntington. Tickets to this National Historic Landmark are good for seven consecutive days, so you can return during your visit if you missed something or want to see more.
RECREATION AND SPORTS
Besides the pier at Myrtle Beach State Park, there are seven other piers in the area where you can fish. You also can head out on a charter to do some deep-sea fishing or head inland to one of the many lakes in the area for some freshwater fishing.
If fishing is not your thing, or you want a different fishing experience, check out Black River Outdoors for its eco-kayak tours or kayak fishing tours. Or add some power by renting a pontoon boat or personal watercraft from Myrtle Beach Watersports, which promises something for everyone.
The area is home to nearly 100 designer golf courses including some of the greats who have played the game: Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus. One course, Tidewater Golf Club, has been called “Pebble Beach of the East Coast” since eight of its holes are along the coast. It also had been ranked one of America’s Top 100 Greatest Public Courses by Golf Digest.
Not to be outdone, Myrtle Beach also holds the distinction as being the “Miniature Golf Capital of the World,” with more than 50 courses throughout the area, many of them themed.

Huntington Beach State Park offers camping, but it also is home to Atalaya, the winter home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. New Yorkers Archer Huntington, son
of a railroad baron, was an industrialist and philanthropist while Anna Hyatt Huntington was a sculptor. They built Atalaya (Spanish for watchtower) in the early 1930s since Anna suffered from tuberculosis. Tours of the National Historic Landmark home are available daily, either docent-led or by self-guided audio, but it is a popular location for large events. It is best to call ahead to make sure it is available on the day you want to visit.
and geocachers to move through the area freely.
For more bird-watching opportunities,
head down the coast to Huntington Beach State Park, where more than 300 species of birds have been spotted. Besides the birds, there is a good chance you will see loggerhead turtles in the park and, at the freshwater lake, you might even see an alligator or even a mink.
