Take a drive from Boston into Canada and along the way
enjoy lobster, discover lighthouses and delve into history. By John T. Garcia
I’ll admit it. Driving in Boston or the Northeast in January does not sound like something I want to tackle, but as
16 miles “as a reminder of the inextinguishable American spirit.” To take a closer look, there are some guided tours to get you there. Then rest up, because your driving adventure begins the following day.
From Boston, head north to Gloucester, made famous as the setting for the film, “The Perfect Storm” starring George Clooney. As you continue north and cross into Maine, you will come upon Maine’s southernmost beacon, Cape Neddick Lighthouse, and gaze at Boon Island Lighthouse just offshore. Your final destination for the day will be Kennebunkport, Maine, a summer home for many U.S. Presidents.
The next day, a short drive will land you in Cape Porpoise Harbor, with views of the Goat Island Lighthouse. From there, continue to Portland, Maine’s largest city, originally a colonial seaport, where you should enjoy your first (or 10th) bowl of New England clam chowder. You can then walk it off by exploring the Portland Head Lighthouse. Your drive culminated today
with anything these days, you need to plan. So, this is something you will not go out and do this weekend or even later this month. This drive is one you want to organize for the spring, the summer or even the fall, if you want to see the leaves change colors.
