“L’Affichomania: The Passion for French Posters” Taft Museum of Art, Cincinnati
taftmuseum.org
Tens of thousands of bright, bold posters were plastered along the streets of Paris at the turn of the 20th century, promoting everything from products and inventions to the famed bohemian events and performers of Montmarte. The posters were so popular they fueled a collectors’ craze.
Five of the master Parisian printmakers (Chéret, Grasset, Steinlen, Mucha and Toulouse-Lautrec) are featured in a new, nationally touring exhibition that debuts at the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati beginning in June.
At the turn of the 20th century, France
witnessed the first great era of poster
art, sometimes called its golden age.
The large-scale color lithographs were
heralded as a new art form – a brilliant fusion of craft and commerce. The popularity of posters fueled a passion for collecting them, called affichomanie (craze for posters). Thanks to relaxed posting guidelines, along with advances in color printing, tens of thousands of posters were plastered on the buildings and kiosks of Paris every year. Pedestrians encountered these large prints throughout the city, making graphic art and design a part of modern daily life.

Buckeye Country Superfest Ohio Stadium, Columbus buckeyecountrysuperfest.com
King of Country, George Strait, will headline Buckeye Country Superfest 2019 joined by chart-topping Blake Shelton, 2018 CMA New Artist of the Year nominee Chris Janson, Texas Trio Midland and singer/songwriter RaeLynn at iconic Ohio Stadium in Columbus.
The epic return of Strait to Columbus marks the artist’s only show in the state of Ohio since his Cowboy Rides Away Tour stop at Nationwide Arena in 2014 when he announced he would no longer tour and only perform select engagements in the future.
With an unmatched 60 singles hitting the top of the charts – more than any other artist in any genre –
during his 30-year career, Strait is the undeniable “King of Country Music.” He has collected 33 Platinum or multi-Platinum-selling albums, more than any country artist and third across all genres behind only The Beatles and Elvis Presley. Strait is the only act in history to have a Top 10 hit every year for more than three decades and has sold nearly 70 million albums and earned more than 60 major entertainment industry awards, including induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
