Comedians take over the city September 20-29 as JFL42, Toronto’s Comedy Festival, returns for the seventh consecutive year. This spin-off of the largest international comedy festival in the world held each July in Montreal gets bigger every year. This year’s headliners include Hannibal Buress, Jo Koy, Seth Meyers and Wanda Sykes. The event features more than 45 acts and 200 performances, including ComedyCon, which gives fans a chance to see their favorite acts during the day. For a schedule, tickets and more information, visit www.jfl42.com.
More authors return to the city for the International Festival of Authors which runs from Oct. 18 through 28, also at the Harbourfront Centre. Celebrating its 39th year as Canada’s oldest and largest festival of words and ideas, the event draws the best contemporary writers for readings, discussions, interviews and book signings. For a list of participants, schedule and more information, visit www.ifoa.org.
One of the more unique festivals is Nuit Blanche Toronto, which is celebrating its 13th year. Presented by the city, Nuit Blanche (French for white night) is a free, citywide celebration of art, which runs from dusk to dawn, this year from the evening of Sept. 29 through the morning of Sept. 30. The event features various exhibits, live presentations and artistic displays through the streets and parks of the city. Its origins stem from Night of the Arts as part of the Helsinki Festival in
1989. From there, other communities around the world have adopted the event and now more than 30 cities hold similar events, including six in the United States. For more information about Nuit Blanche Toronto,

But the oldest of all these also is one of a kind. The 96th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is the world’s largest combined indoor agricultural fair and international equestrian competition. This year’s event will take place Nov. 2-11 at Exhibition Place and more than

6,000 animals are expected to be on hand, with nearly 1,000 being horses for The Royal Horse Show, the equestrian event where 1,000 contestants compete for nearly $1 million in prizes. The Horse Show features indoor eventing, show jumping and dressage.
The Royal, as it is called locally, spotlights the work of many, with more than 2,000 agricultural competitions highlighting animals, vegetables, wines, cheeses and butter sculpting. And since no fair is complete without food, The Royal, being one of kind, takes to another level with daily culinary shows, tastings and 5th Annual International Chef Competition, where top chefs from Canada, the U.S. and abroad compete to assume The Royal title. It also will be serving its visitor-favorite Rosti Potatoes (think of a thick shredded-potato pancake that’s been fried, with toppings), lamb on a bun, fresh salads and even four-course meals.
But in between the movies, comedy shows or visits to the petting zoo, make sure to check out the rest of the city.
One thing that definitely catches your eye is CN Tower. It rises 1,815 feet above the city and was the tallest free-standing structure in the world until 2010. You ride a glass-fronted elevator (some even have glass panels in the floor) up 1,122 feet
to the Glass Floor level where you can step out and look straight down or step outside to the Outdoor SkyTerrace.
Don’t like the view? Then head up a bit
a higher to the LookOut Level (1,136 feet) with floor-to-ceiling windows, providing you views of Toronto, and on clear days, across Lake Ontario to Buffalo and Rochester, New York. Still not impressed? Then keep going up to SkyPod (1,465 feet), one of the highest observation platforms in the world.
