A Visit to the Wall of the Fallen
The International Towing & Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum recently added to its Wall of the Fallen the names of
45 towing operators who died in the line of duty. The 13th annual Wall of the Fallen ceremony, held Oct. 12 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, remembered each victim, shared their individual stories and recognized their families.
AAA President and CEO Marshall Doney addressed attendees, which included
survivors of 28 of the victims. Doney
expressed appreciation for the
commitment and heroic deeds of the
fallen, and his sympathy to their families
and loved ones. He also pledged AAA’s
support in educating the public about the importance of Slow Down, Move Over laws, stating that fewer than 30% of Americans are even aware of the requirements.
State law requires drivers approaching a stationary emergency vehicle, including tow trucks, to slow down and vacate the lane next to the stopped vehicle if possible.
Doney’s call to action is as follows:
• Educate your friends, family, colleagues and neighbors about the danger of working at the roadside.
Membership Numbers Continue to Climb
On the heels of the 60-million-member milestone, AAA’s growth continues with a record-high membership – and the highest 12-month renewal rate in September
since 2013.
As of September’s end, AAA reached
60,341,335 members and an 88.1% renewal rate. Year-over-year net member growth is more than 1.1 million members.
• Engage them in our cause to help spread this important message.
• Advocate for Move Over laws.
• Make sure your friends and family know and understand
the law.
• Use your social media presence to remind drivers that
the law is in place to protect our heroic first responders. • Lead by example.
• Put down your phone and limit distractions.
• Do the right thing by slowing down and moving over
whenever you see flashing lights.
• Use that experience as a teaching moment for your
passengers by explaining why it’s important to take this action every time you see a first responder on the roadside.
